Spiritual Preparation

Elder Neal A Maxwell said,
“If we are faithful the day will come when those deserving pioneers and ancestors, whom we rightly praise for having overcome the adversities in their wilderness trek, will praise today's faithful for having made their way successfully through a desert of despair and for having passed through a cultural wilderness, while still keeping the faith.”

Ideas to Help With Your Spiritual Preparation

  • Visit the Church's web page on Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel. This site is amazing and will help you as you study your own pioneer heritage before trek.
  • Read “Our Heritage: A Brief History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints”. This is a short easy book to read that covers the history of the church from the First Vision to Present Day. It is available at any Church Distribution Center or Deseret Book stores and most wards have them available for members. It is also available as a downloadable PDF on the Church's web site.
  • Discover and/or follow something of interest to you about the early church pioneers.        lds.org is a great place to start.
  • Learn more about Willie/Martin Handcart Companies. As you read about their experiences, apply their stories and situations to your life today.
    President Gordon B. Hinckley said,
“These were great people in whose footsteps we walk. They were men and women of courage and faith, of enterprise and great capacity to do what they set out to do.”
